ON EXPERIENCE OF UTILISING HYDROGEN FUEL FOR AUTOMOTIVE POSITIVE-IGNITION ENGINES DOI: 10.33868/0365-8392-2022-4-272-49-58
Abstract. It is considered the practice and potential possibility on broad usage of hydrogen fuel for automotive engines with spark ignition. Some properties of hydrogen, which allow it application as motor fuel, are discussed. A number of examples on effective operation of hydrogen ICE with positive ignition, serving for motor vehicles’ propulsion, are presented. Despite the rather long history of using hydrogen fuel in internal combustion engines with spark ignition, the widespread global practice in this field developed significantly in the last quarter of the twentieth century. In particular, Ukrainian scientists and engineers were actively involved in this area. Today, this topic is part of the engineering mechanics curriculum at some foreign universities and is being researched at academic institutions in Europe, North America, India, China, Turkey and other countries. This direction was actively explored by leading automotive manufacturers in Western countries, especially starting from the last decade of the 20th century; currently, China and some other countries take a more proactive stance in this regard. It is advisable to continue theoretical and applied research regarding methods, tools, and technical solutions for both retrofitting gasoline engines to run on hydrogen and also determining fundamentally new technologies that could occupy a certain niche in the future development of the automotive transportation sector by using hydrogen as a fuel in internal combustion engines with spark ignition. Keywords: hydrogen fuel; motor-related properties of hydrogen; internal combustion engine (ICE).
